Rugby around the world: Iberia

I kindly remember one comment in the NZ Herald last year about the pool rivals for the All Blacks (Italy, Portugal, Romania and Scotland)

"Portuguese scare me. I don't know anything about Portugal".

Spanish as I am it made me smile; How high this kiwi aficionado rated the rugby in Iberia (Spain and Portugal)!!! Portugal managed to score two tries against the All Blacks, true. But they received 105 points against, if I am not mistaken.

The truth is that Portugal and Spain play in the same division, and they cannot certainly pose any threat to any Tier 1 nation.

But, alas, some news are nice to read, and the news that Spain and Portugal are engaging their own SuperRugby competition is certainly good news.

Data:
  1. Ten teams, 5 from Spain, 4 from Portugal, 1 from Gibraltar (since Gibraltar belongs to Britain, they could be hot-favourites, don't you think? :-)
  2. 10 players in each team will get paid (that is how professionalism can be introduced in Iberia)
  3. The name shall be: "Liga Super Iberica"
  4. Kicks off in 2009 hopefully

Please keep me posted on this league. I am afraid that if Spain are to beat Germany, Iberian rugby will take another slapshot. Please forward me all you hear and if the name Alphonson Rodriguez(he has one cap I believe) ever appears, please let me know. As you know I had the Spanish national jersey stolen from me but my Ricard placemat says Club Amigos Del Rugby-Portaceli-Sevilla. As you know, I believe, I was his university coach here.

Villajoyosa Rugby Club have just been awarded the first professional franchise in the Valencia Community to participate in the New Rugby SuperIberica Competition.

This a great coup for Sport in the Costa Blanca area and will ensure professional top class rugby in the area for many years to come.

The first professional rugby union tournament in the history of Spanish rugby union will have a franchise system. There will be 6 Spanish teams and 4 Portuguese. This is a quantum leap for the game in Spain.
This brand new Rugby project includes an initial 6 Franchises from Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Basque Country, Andalucia, Castilla and Leon Valencia. Clubs awarded a place will be joined by 4 teams from Portugal. The concept is based loosely on the Magners league which is the successfully competition played between teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The League is a closed franchise concession for 10 years without promotion or relegation. Most games will be broadcast Live on Canal Plus TV.

The SuperIberica league will commence after the domestic league has been completed, during the months of April, May, June and July. The League begins on April 24th and the final four will playoff on July 5th.

La Vila will play in this new league under the name of 'Costa Blanca Mariners' combining the local aspects of tourism and seafaring.

Gibraltar does not belong to Spain if you knew your history correctly and secondly we have our own internal league with the prospects of many Gibraltar players been drafted into the Sotogrande rocks (notice the name "Rocks") which is rumored to play in the super Iberica rugby league next season.
